Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR)

Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging (CMR) is a safe non-invasive imaging technique that uses a strong magnetic field and radiofrequency waves to create detailed images of the heart and arteries. The UK has globally leading expertise in CMR with a well-developed network of centres (more than 80 hospitals offer CMR; BSCMR survey results based on 2017-2018 data). While CMR has a widening range of clinical indications, CMR measures have not yet been systematically tailored to IMID patients.

A key aim of this workstream is to standardise CMR use to improve access and provide a basis for future multi-centre research studies and explore the application of more novel imaging methods. CMR usage across our Partnership sites is being surveyed to develop harmonised CMR protocols and diagnostic criteria for the detection of CVD in IMIDs so people across the UK are assessed in a way that is comparable across centres. As part of this work, we are conducting phantom-based standardisation studies led by Professors Vanessa Ferriera and Stefan Piechnik at the University of Oxford and are refining CMR diagnostic criteria for CVD in patients with IMID using a modified Delphi technique.

As part of the UK CARDIO-IMID Registry Study, we have incorporated an optional extended-protocol CMR sub-study to collect additional measurements for a more impactful dataset to advance knowledge of the cardiovascular effects of IMIDs and its commonly used treatments.

This work and platform will strengthen partnerships between cardiovascular imaging experts and physicists and diagnostic industry partners and offer new opportunities for developing imaging biomarkers. This initiative will provide a robust platform through which to develop and utilise new and innovative methodologies, techniques, and technologies.
